More than an isolated text
A material's meaning often depends on its place in a particular communication: who the author and addressee are, when and where it was published, which events preceded it, and which documents, symbols or statements it relates to. The object of examination may therefore include the material itself and relevant information about its context.
Recording digital objects
For online materials, it is advisable to preserve the link, access date and time, the original file or the most complete possible copy of the page. If audio or video is being examined, it is preferable to provide the original file and information about the recording's provenance.
Limits of examination
The specialist examines only the materials submitted and agreed. If a conclusion depends on a missing fragment, source or context, this must be reflected in the limits of the examination.
